More rugged than the packaged camerasOct 03, 2010
By James Beno I have the Defender SN500-4CH-002 (DVR unit with 4 cameras). One of the cameras that came with that unit died, so I ordered this camera as a replacement. I always thought the packaged camera mounts were a little wimpy. They had a ball joint that tends to come loose, are easily forced out of position (sometimes they move when I dust away the cobwebs in front of the camera!), and the heads of the screws can strip right off if you apply too much force during installation.
The SP500 camera is much higher quality. Overall, it feels pretty solid. It's a little bigger in size. Instead of adjusting a ball joint, you position the camera by loosening and tightening two recessed screws with an allen wrench. It grips pretty tight. The mount itself is much bigger, with holes for four screws instead of three. It appears to be made of heavy duty plastic, and doesn't look cheap at all.
Although the screws that came with the SP500 are different than the ones that came with the original DVR package, they look similar enough for me to not trust them (I twisted the head off too many camera mount screws with just a hand screwdriver). So to be safe, I'm using my own set of galvanized wood screws to secure it to an exterior post.
The video quality and infrared appear to be a step up from the packaged cameras. The picture looks crisper and has more contrast, and the infrared has a greater reach. I'll probably upgrade the remaining 3 cameras to the SP500 over time.

didn't last long.Jul 18, 2011
By Hiloram Within two weeks of the install the night vision went out. It still works during the day and it does give you a little better distance than the camera that came with the unit. The color is also better than the supplied cameras. I think unless you know the person you are looking at you will still have a hard time IDing them from this camera(but what do you expect at this price). I would have gave it 3 stars if the night vision didn't fail.
best camera we've ever gotApr 24, 2012
By diana This is our second camera we have purchased .We we so happy and impressed with the first one prompted us to buy this one and plan on buying more. The picture is true color to as you see outside. The night vision is the best we have seen,we see more than 50 feet.We can watch all kinds of wildlife sitting in our living room from birds flying around to rabbits hopping around. At night we also can watch the rabbits hopping around.
Resolution is the same as SP-301Nov 23, 2011
By Bay Area reviewer I have the 8 camera system with the SP-301 cameras. I hooked this up side by side with a SP-301 and the only difference I see is that the camera view is about 5-10' forward from where the SP-301 is. I was under the mistaken assumption that I would get better resoution (i.e. you could identify somebody walking by, read a license plate, that kind of thing) from this camera. Glad I only bought 1, I can use 1 for a longer view, but not really what I wanted. So if you want to look at something about 50' out instead of 20' out, it's what you want. Otherwise use the 301s.
Also, this thing does not want to mount from the ceiling, it wants to mount from the wall. If you want top mount again, use the 301s.

Compared to the other Defender cameras I have bought, this is the one! Much improved mount, very good daylight picture and good nighttime picture. I have a good clear picture from 30' away. I am very happy with this camera.
